Why do you need a dog tag?

A dog tag is a small identification tag with engraving of your details on that is typically attached to a dog's collar or harness. It serves several important purposes:

Identification

A dog tag provides crucial identification information in case your dog gets lost. This allows others to quickly and easily reach you if they find your dog wandering or your dog is picked up by someone.

Safety

A dog tag can also provide important safety information. For example, if your dog has any allergies, medical conditions, or requires specific medications, you can include this information on the tag. This can be especially helpful in emergency situations where quick access to such details is crucial for your dog's well-being.

Legal Requirement

In the UK, it is a legal requirement for dogs to wear identification tags. Failing to comply with this regulation can result in fines or other legal consequences.

What to put on a dog tag?

Legally in the UK, dog tags must include owner’s name and address including the postcode. We have then listed some optional information that may be desirable.

Pet Name

This is a personal choice but with dog theft on the rise in the UK, many owners choose to leave this information off as it makes it far easier for someone to gain the trust of your dog if they know its name.

Contact details

Adding a contact number is not a legal requirement but if your dog were to escape or go missing, having your contact details easily available for someone to ring you if they found your dog seems like a sensible idea to us. Losing your dog is every owner's worst nightmare so this added information facilitates a quicker reunion with your pet.

Special Needs

If you dog has special medical requirements, it is a good idea to include these details on dog tags - even as a seperate tag to the ID tag. This could be the difference between life or death for your pet in a serious situation.

Dog Tag Size

Consider how much information you want to include on your tag and then choose the appropriate size. Remember, the more text you add, the smaller it becomes to ensure your tag is large enough to be readable.

How to attach a dog tag on a collar?

Each pet tag comes attached to a split ring which can be securely fastened to the D ring on your dog collar. We offer a wide range of dog collars that will fit our tags - we can even add the pet tag onto it for you. If your dog wears a harness instead of a collar , ensure you can add you pet tags to it - most of our harnesses have an tag ring for you to fasten it to.
