Why do I need to trim the hair on my dogs paw pads?
Trimming the hair on your dog's paw pads is important for several reasons.

First, the hair around the paws and between the toes can accumulate dirt, debris, and other foreign objects, which can lead to discomfort, irritation, and even infection. Trimming the hair helps to prevent these issues and keep your dog's paws clean and healthy.

Secondly, long hair around the paw pads can cause your dog to slip or lose their footing on slippery surfaces, which increases the risk of injuries. Trimming the hair can improve your dog's traction and prevent accidents.

Lastly, excessive hair around the paw pads can mat and tangle, which can be painful for your dog and make it difficult to walk. Trimming the hair can prevent matting and ensure your dog is comfortable and mobile. Overall, regular trimming of the hair around your dog's paw pads is essential for their health, safety, and well-being.

How do I know if my dog's paw pads need trimming?

  1. The hair around the paw pads is visibly long and overgrown.

  2. Your dog is slipping or having difficulty maintaining their footing on smooth surfaces, such as tile or hardwood floors.

  3. Your dog is frequently licking or chewing their paws, which can be a sign of discomfort or irritation.

  4. Your dog is showing signs of discomfort when walking or standing, such as limping, favoring one paw, or avoiding putting weight on a particular paw.

  5. You can feel matting or tangles in the hair around your dog's paw pads.

How long does it take?

Typically, it can take anywhere from a few minutes to 5-10 minutes dependent on how overgrown the fur is.

Do I have to book?

You don’t have to book in advance but if you want to book ahead that’s fine! We run our clinic appointments from Monday to Friday. We will ask if your dog is reactive before completing your booking. Just give us a call at 01484 246420 or book here.

Can I watch?
We usually ask owners to stay out of the room whilst we do pad trimming – this is because dogs often play up when their owner is in the room – you would be surprised how well behaved most dogs are for us when the owner isn’t there!  If we feel that it would benefit your dog to have you in the room for comfort then we will come and ask you to join us.
