Feeding a fussy dog can be challenging, but there are strategies to make mealtimes more enjoyable for both of you. While some dogs are naturally enthusiastic eaters, others can be picky, especially smaller breeds or those who have become accustomed to table scraps. If you're struggling with a fussy eater, here are ten tips that might help:
-
Choose High-Quality Kibble: Opt for kibble (dry dog food) made with premium ingredients. Look for named meats (not by-products, meat meal or derivatievs) as the primary ingredient. Foods made with quality meat, fish, and fresh vegetables are generally more appealing. Our Freshly Prepared range has 50% meat whilst our Gourmet range has 65% meat!
-
Add Warm Water: Mixing a little warm water with kibble can release the food’s aromas, making it more enticing for your dog.
-
Incorporate Wet Food: Adding a couple of spoonfuls of good quality dog friendly pate or wet food (such as Forthglade) to kibble can boost its appeal. Wet food is particularly useful for older dogs or those with waning appetites. A small amount mixed into kibble can tempt even the pickiest eaters.

-
Mix in Yoghurt, Sardines, Toppers or Veggies: Adding a little plain, natural yoghurt, sardines, mackerel, or vegetables to your dog’s food can make it more appetising. Try placing these additions in the bowl first, then adding kibble on top so your dog has to eat the kibble to get to the good stuff. Ensure fish is either fresh or tinned in spring water rather than oil or brine. Food toppers are a great way to add interest too when sprinkled over the top of your dog's food.
-
Practice Tough Love: If your dog refuses to eat within 10-15 minutes, remove the food and don't offer it again until the next mealtime. Skipping a meal occasionally won't harm your dog, especially if they’re not overly active and may not be hungry.
-
Rotate Proteins: Changing the protein source in your dog’s food regularly can keep them interested. You can switch proteins from the same brand without the need to gradually introduce them as you would a different brand.
-
Hand-Feed or Scatter Kibble: Some reluctant eaters may prefer to be hand-fed initially before transitioning to eating from a bowl. Alternatively, scattering kibble on the ground or feeding them from a treat dispenser can activate their natural scavenging instincts.
-
Feed Slightly Less: Try feeding a little less than the recommended portion. A slightly smaller meal might make your dog more eager to eat at the next mealtime. Many dogs are overfed, and high-quality food often requires smaller portions.
-
Limit Treats: Keep treats to a minimum to ensure your dog is hungry at mealtimes.
-
Make Mealtimes Enjoyable: Create a positive atmosphere around mealtime. Be enthusiastic when preparing their food and encourage excitement without stressing over whether they eat immediately.
By following these tips, you can help your fussy dog develop healthier eating habits and make mealtimes more enjoyable for both of you.
