Winter Dog Paw Problems & How to Avoid Them

Winter walks are brilliant — there's something lovely about getting out in the crisp air with your dog. But as much as I love those cold morning strolls with Reggie & Dolly, I'm always mindful about what winter weather can do to their paws.

Over the years, I've seen so many dogs come in with dry, cracked, sore paws simply because their owners didn't know what to look for or how to protect them. And honestly? Most of it is preventable with a few simple habits.

I wanted to share what I've learned with you — because the last thing any of us want is for our pups to be uncomfortable during what should be an enjoyable walk.

Simple Steps to Protect Your Dog's Paws

Clean Paws After Every Walk

One of the simplest and most effective things you can do it clean your dog's paws after every single walk. A warm cloth works fine, but pet-safe wipes are even easier.

We love the Adios Compostable Pet Wipes - they're soft, unscented, gentle on the skin, and compostable too. Just wipe the pads and get between the toes where all the salt and grit collects. Takes about 20 seconds but makes a huge difference.

And make sure the paws are properly dry afterwards — moisture between the toes can lead to irritation.

Moisturise & Protect

Winter strips moisture from paw pads, so adding a balm into your routine is one of the best things you can do. A good paw balm creates a barrier that stops the cold and salt from drying the skin out, and it nourishes the pads so they stay flexible instead of cracking.

We absolutely love the Nose & Paw Balm with Lavender & Peppermint. It's natural, smells lovely, and is incredibly soothing. Just rub a little onto each pad before you go out, and again once you're home and the paws are clean.

Trim Paw Fur & Keep Nails Short

If your dog has fluffy paws or tufts of fur between the pads, snow and ice will cling to it and make walking uncomfortable. A quick trim around the pads makes such a difference.

And if nails are too long, it changes the way their foot hits the ground and puts more pressure on the paw pads. Keep them trimmed and winter walks will be so much easier.

Soothe Any Irritation Early

Even with all the right steps, paws can still get a bit dry or irritated. The key is catching it early.

If you notice redness, little cracks, or your dog licking their paws more than usual, soothe them straight away. The Herbal Dog Co Colloidal Silver Cream is brilliant for this — it's gentle, calming, and fantastic for irritated skin or little dry patches.

Adjust Walks When Weather Is Really Harsh

If the pavements are heavily salted, icy, or it's absolutely freezing, shorten the walk or choose a grassy route if you can. Indoor enrichment like lick mats, sniffing games, or puzzle toys can burn off energy without putting stress on their paws.

Final Tips

Just a few extra things that can really help:

  • Don't let your dog chew at their feet - it often makes irritation worse.
  • If you ever see bleeding cracks or your dog is limping, contact a vet.
  • Make paw care part of your daily routine in winter - it takes minutes but saves so much discomfort.
  • And if you're ever unsure which products to use, just pop in and ask. We're always happy to help and have a proper chat.

Right, I think that covers everything!

Winter can be tough on paws, but with a quick wipe, a bit of balm, and a few simple checks, you can keep them comfortable, protected and happy all season long.
