Frequently Asked Questions About Pizzles: Puppy, Skinny, Standard, Thick (15cm)

What is the difference between a pizzle and a bully stick?

The main difference between a pizzle and a bully stick is the terminology used. A pizzle specifically refers to the anatomical part (the penis) from which the treat is made, while a bully stick is a more general term used to describe the chew treat made from dried pizzles. Pizzles and bully sticks are used interchangeably but meant the same thing in the context of our products.

What are bully sticks made of?

Bully sticks are made from the dried penises of bulls or steers. The pizzle, as it's called, is cleaned and then stretched into its characteristic stick shape. Afterward, it is dried through a natural process. It's important to note that bully sticks are a single-ingredient treat, meaning they contain no additives, preservatives, or artificial ingredients. They are a natural dog chew that provides dogs with a long-lasting and satisfying chewing experience.

Are bully sticks safe for dogs?

Yes, in general, bully sticks are considered safe for dogs. They are a popular long lasting and natural dog chew treat made from dried bull or steer pizzle (penis). Bully sticks are highly digestible and don't splinter like cooked bones, making them a safer option for dogs.

How long do bully sticks last?

The longevity of a bully stick depends on several factors, including the size of the bully stick, the chewing habits and breed of your dog, and the quality of the product. Generally, bully sticks can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours of chewing. Skinny Pizzles: A small-sized bully stick may be consumed relatively quickly, especially by aggressive chewers or larger dogs. It could last anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes. We recommend Skinny Pizzles for puppies and toy-small breed dogs Standard Pizzles: A medium-sized thickness bully stick may last longer, ranging from 20 minutes to an hour or more, depending on the dog's chewing style.  We recommend standard pizzles for small to medium breed dogs Thick Pizzles: Larger, denser and thicker bully sticks can take even longer for a dog to chew through. Some heavy chewers may work on them for several hours or even multiple sessions but others will still power through them in 30 minutes or so.  We recommend thick pizzles for medium-large breed dogs or particularly aggressive chewers

How many calories do bully sticks have?

The number of calories in a bully stick varies depending on the size. However, as a general guideline, a typical standard 15cm bully stick may contain around 70 to 100 calories. Thicker bully sticks can have around 150 to 200 calories or more. It's important to note that bully sticks are calorie-dense treats, and the calorie content can add up quickly, especially if your dog consumes them regularly. If you're concerned about your dog's calorie intake or weight management, it's crucial to factor in the calories from treats, including bully sticks, into their overall daily diet.

Can puppies have bully sticks?

Yes, general, puppies can have bully sticks from 12 weeks of age. Bully sticks are often considered a safe and suitable chew treat for puppies, especially when they are teething. We recommend our Skinny Pizzles as a starting point for puppies. Always supervise your puppy when chewing on a bully stick.

Do bully sticks cause diarrhoea in dogs?

In general, bully sticks are not known to cause diarrhoea in dogs. As a natural, single-ingredient treat, they typically contain no additives or artificial ingredients that could trigger digestive issues.

Are bully sticks good for dog's teeth?

Yes, bully sticks can be good for dogs' teeth when used as a chew treat. Chewing on bully sticks can help promote dental health in several ways: Mechanical Cleaning: The act of chewing on the bully stick helps to mechanically clean your dog's teeth by removing plaque and tartar build-up. The abrasive action of the chew can help scrape off some of the plaque, which, if left unaddressed, could lead to dental issues such as gum disease or tooth decay. Saliva Production: Chewing stimulates saliva production, and saliva contains enzymes that aid in breaking down food particles and bacteria in the mouth. This natural process can help reduce the accumulation of harmful bacteria in your dog's mouth. Exercise Jaw Muscles: Chewing on a bully stick provides exercise for your dog's jaw muscles, which can be beneficial for their overall dental health.

Can dogs choke on bully sticks?

As with any treat, there is a possibility that dogs can choke on bully sticks, especially if the stick becomes small enough to be swallowed whole or if a piece breaks off and gets lodged in the dog's throat. To minimize the risk of choking, it's crucial to follow these safety measures: Choose the Right Size: Select an appropriate size bully stick for your dog. Avoid giving very small dogs or puppies large bully sticks that they might struggle to handle or try to swallow whole. Supervise: Always supervise your dog while they are chewing on a bully stick or any other type of chew treat. This allows you to intervene if you notice that the stick is getting too small or if there are signs of potential choking. Discard Small Pieces: As the bully stick gets chewed down to a small size, consider taking it away from your dog to prevent them from trying to swallow it. Discard small or partially chewed pieces that could pose a choking hazard. Provide Fresh Bully Sticks: Over time, a bully stick can become softer and more pliable as your dog chews on it. To minimise the risk of choking, replace the bully stick with a fresh one when it becomes significantly worn down.

How often should I give my dog a bully stick?

The frequency with which you can give your dog a bully stick depends on a few factors, including your dog's size, age, chewing habits, and overall health. While bully sticks can be a great treat for dogs, they are calorie-dense, so it's important to consider their overall diet and treat intake.

How do I store bully sticks?

Bully sticks will keep fresh for 18 months if kept in a reasable packet or container at room temperature. For partially chewed bully sticks, we recommend popping them into a resealable bag - this will keep them free from bacteria and any odours contained.

Can I freeze bully sticks?

Yes you can! A frozen bully stick makes a nice cooling treat on a hot day and provides soothing relief for teething puppies.
